Abstract animation however often favours 2D flatness, which obfuscates spatial relations and thereby underlines the effects of abstraction. Can stereoscopic vision be subverted, and employed in the service of an alternate reality, an expanded abstraction? Can traditional notions of 3D be disrupted to create impossible spaces? Protip: The Deep Space 8K screening Max Hattler: Expanded Abstractions includes a stereoscopic projection of Hattler’s III=III (2016), which explores ideas discussed in this presentation.
