The vastness of space-time is the main theme in the latest work of electronic music artist Irradiation. Inspired by hard science fiction literature, the Viennese musician transforms scientific theories of cosmology and quantum physics into music. Her new album refers to the Xeelee Sequence, a series of stories written by the British author Stephen Baxter.
Think about a universe ruled by an enigmatic alien race of techno images you might never even see or won‘t be able to imagine – their civilisation is too advanced and too old. Existing nearly since the beginning of the universe for billions of years and engaged in projects which threaten the fragile fabric of space-time itself. Is it possible that these aliens do it all for a greater good? Humans tend to destroy what they don’t understand. So dark times are ahead.
The eerie works of Irradiation show no way out of this disturbing scenario. The acoustic space is vast, the soundscapes are dark, as one imagines the Xeelee-Universe. The album is full of twisted time paradoxes and sounds stretched ad infinitum – frozen time is the constant in this techno-electronical world.
Some parts will work in the darker corners of a techno bunker, but most of the music will make you just want to be sucked in, like into a black hole. Resistance is futile.

Irradiation is a sound artist, composer, DJ and club host as well as the co-initiator and manager of the Viennese label TEMP~, founded in 2003. Irradiation’s musical work is best described as a permanent exploration of the space between repetitive and abstract electronic music. Her pieces moved towards experimental sound art over the last years, yet without losing the dance floor from sight. She joins the loose ends between electronic dance music and acousmatic improvisation.
Besides her solo project, she enjoys working with other musicians, composers and visual artists. From the beginning, the Irradiation set-up was conceived as an audio-visual interlacing, with artists Stefan Kushima, Jade, c++, mes or Thomas Wagensommerer providing the visuals.
Her musical collaborations include Electric Indigo, Didi Bruckmayr (Wipeout, Fuckhead), Rapper / Spoken Word Artist Mieze Medusa and many others. Currently she is engaged with Chra as Pasajera Oscura and with Martina Claussen as Hidden Shards.
Irradiation also creates immersive sound art. Her interactive installation Decoherence 1.0, a collaboration with physicists Gabriela Barreto Lemos and Mehul Malik, is an invitation to reflect on the nature of quantum reality.
