Takk for ating med. I love you. you you you you Hello. Guten Abend. Welcome to Café Adele. I'm very happy to be here via my home in Brooklyn, New York. I've been playing a lot in this very spot for the past year and a half. And one of the things I am really enjoying about being at home so much has been getting to not just spend so much time with Herr Dr. Cello here but also to give a lot of love to the other instruments in our house which you'll see over the course of the set. So this first song is called Waldmärchen and it's a love song inspired by some of the woods in Austria in Kärnten in fact I know these words Like the back of your hand And yet, and yet Sometimes I still get lost in them. I know these trees like the hairs on your skin. But oh my love, I think I'm lost again. I know every stone. I know every route I've tripped and fallen on I know the tuning of the light at every time of day But still it takes my breath away I know these roads Like the curve of your arms But somehow still I take the wrong turns Every time I know these hills Like the lids of your eyes But oh my friend I'm in these woods again You know you take the wrong turn again You know you take the wrong turn so many times It starts to feel right You know you fumble as you wander head in the clouds You run again, you fall again, get up again And fumble as you stumble towards the light I know every stone I know every root I know every route I've tripped and fallen on I know the tuning of the light at every time of day But still it takes my breath away Yes, still you take my breath away I know these words Like the back of your head And yet, and yet, sometimes I still get lost in them. Thanks a lot. So I realized I forgot to introduce myself before. My name's Megan Burke, and you've actually been listening, unbeknownst to you, to the Megan Burke Trio. It's our debut, and you may be wondering where the other members are. They're, in fact, some very small backup dancers hiding behind the cello as you listen. And they're very excited to join you in the flesh at some point in the not-too-distant future. This next song I dedicate to them, but also to all of the other kids in my life by whom it was inspired. So I teach quite a bit and a couple of summers ago I was teaching in North Carolina and was just very taken with the way that some of the teenagers I was teaching kind of were straddling the imaginative world of childhood and the critical thinking world of adulthood and finding just all these very, very weird, beautiful ways of being in the world. And I was just like, please keep this. Don't let this get adulted out of you. And I think that a lot with kids and sometimes with adults. So I think there's a lot we can all hold on to a little bit more from our childhoods. So this next song is called Little Heart. I hope you enjoy it. squatting barefoot in the heat she tries to pet the bumblebee she says sometimes they let me singing songs about a rainbow trying to pass the time suddenly so alone. And I just want you to be OK. I just want you to stay As strange and wonderful as you are today Bounding loudly up the stairs, his voice cracks as he sings about where all the lonely people Face just like a puppy dog, his feelings on display Why hide them away? Why hide them away? And I hope you never learn to hide the you that's brimming up inside your little heart Cause there's some things you've figured out that I have long forgotten And there's some things you've yet to learn that I could do without Hiding in your forest nook, you read some lines out of a book, and you're far away. And in your land of make-believe, the squirrels talk and flowers breathe and mice can fight and rats can sing and everyone is kind to me. And I just want you to stay as strange and wonderful as you are today. Today. Today. Today Today Today So continuing on our tour of instruments, the next song I'm going to play is called Settle Struggle. And I wrote it back during one of the many lockdown periods, which I'm sure you've all experienced. And I was thinking about these two words, settle and struggle, in English, which both can have, depending on what words you use them with, what context, can have very different meanings that are positive or negative. So to settle for something, it's often viewed as being something negative, but to settle into something or settle with something is something positive. And what's really the difference? To struggle at something is to be bad at it, but to struggle for something is something positive. And what's really the difference? To struggle at something is to be bad at it, but to struggle for something is something really empowering and important. And of course you sort of need to struggle at something in order to struggle for it. You need to settle for something in order to settle with it. So that was some of the inspiration behind this song, which I hope you'll enjoy. Notice something strange today Let your mind dance its crazy dance Easy dance Running naked in the empty streets Try to be a tree today Find the growth in stillness, root down and wait. Think about a love today One you maybe had forgotten And let it fill up your ribcage Settle for something Settle on something Settle on something, settle with something today. Settle for something, settle into something, settle on something today. Notice something beautiful today Like your curves in the mirror or the lines on their face Notice something green today Breathe its freedom in deep freedom indeed hold it like a prayer Struggle for something Struggle at something Struggle with something today Struggle with something Struggle out of something Struggle for something today This next song, which I'm going to play on yet another member of the family, the viola da gamba, is called Glücksklee. And it was actually inspired by the same woods that inspired Waldmärchen, the first song I played. They're behind my husband's childhood house in Villach. And actually, I'll take this opportunity to thank my husband Bernd Klug, who's been here behind the camera and the audio gear, hopefully making this sound and look lovely in your homes as well as in ours. So thank you so much Bernd for this and everything. Thank you so much, Bernd, for this and everything. These woods, though, they're very beautiful and particularly cool because they're full of all of these different ruins from sort of different eras. There's like stuff from Napoleon times. There's stuff from Celtic times. There's like an ancient church from very early Christian days. church from very early Christian days. Um, and all of the things was just as with ruins generally sort of hint at what they were. Um, just the barest indication of a tomb or a church or a, a house, um, whatever it might be. So yeah, um, this is my gamba song. I found a four-leaf clover in the church upon the hill there were no walls there oh my cupid there Oh my cupid runneth over liquid sunlight streams to fill I have laid my soul bare Romans rolled along these mountains Celts they hid among the stones Trees breathe cool fire Cool fire Underneath our feet The fountains Nestled in these hills The bones the bones Sing some silent choir Someone must have loved you well Tucked inside this I must have loved you well Tucked inside this history People, they still try dry Can you hear my spirit swell Remembering mystery It's just mystery It's just It's just outside So the final piece of this segment of Café Adéle is a piece called Ghost Disco, which I've never performed in any real fashion. Actually, these last three songs I've never played live. It's just been sort of for my own benefit at home. But this one was inspired by an exhibition that was happening in our neighborhood here in Brooklyn about Studio 54 at the Brooklyn Museum, which was set to open on March 13th, 2020. And they had all the mannequins ready with their sparkly dresses from the real clothes people wore to Studio 54. They had the mixes ready, the original club mixes and big speakers. And there was this huge party that was prepared for no one because it couldn't actually open. It did eventually open many, many months later, but there was no sorry I'm getting the the first-hand source here is Berndt who was working on the exhibition and he's actually going to join me on this piece on the base so I'll also be playing Rhodes and Rhythm Machine so we we're very, very happy to be here. Thank you so much for having us as part of Café Adela and I'm looking forward to listening to the rest of the show and perhaps seeing you all in person someday. Old ghosts in the mirror Reflections dancing for no one Spinning out of time The coolest kids in town Are frozen silent waiting Forever inside With the music It's not much of a scene here We left our drugs in the 1970s But have you seen me Just look inside the window Our glitter spangles through the night You could almost think we're still alive The music plays The music sounds The music stays The music sounds in silence There's a party With no one to celebrate There's a music With no one to dance to There's a sparkle with no one to shine on. There's a party, there's a party still Nobody's here to move The beat just bounces off the walls The eternal groove Can you hear it outside? If you listen with your feet If you listen with your teeth If you listen with your body There's a party With no one to celebrate There's a music With no one to dance to music with no one to dance to there's a sparkle with no one to shine on there's a party there's a party, there's a party still. Everyone who was anyone was here once But now there's no one No one to see or be seen by Just the same old, same old Old ghosts in the mirror Reflections dancing for no one spinning out of time Dankeschön. you you Teksting av Nicolai Winther SILENT PRACTICE I'm sorry. ¶¶ Thank you.
