Hello again! I'm now sitting here with the singer of the Petrol Girls. You told me before, if I want to interview after the show, I will see you sweating. Now I know why, because you jumped a lot on stage. It was so amazing. Where do you get the fucking power. Okay, no, I swear. It was so amazing. So tell me, how was it? Yeah, it was great. It was really cool. I've had like four macabres. So I think most of that was caffeine. But yeah, no, it's super fun. Like, this is a lovely festival. And like, what a nice atmosphere. And yeah, like I was just saying, like the front row was all kids in their big headphones. And it was so cute. I loved it. And you're here with your band tonight. How did you guys, girls met? And how long do you exist for now? So actually, it was Julia on bass with us tonight. This was her first show with us. She normally plays with Eagle vs. Shark, but we have lots of different bassists at the moment. So massive well done to her because she smashed it tonight. That was awesome. And then me and Joe and Zoc have been a band for, God, like eight, nine, maybe ten years, a long time. And we met in London because Zock is Austrian, but he was there because of his partner, Jess. And yeah, we slowly all moved out to Austria. Zock wanted to move back there anyway. And do you know what? Like the cost of living in this country and the quality of life is so much better than in the UK. And I just don't think our lives as creative people would be possible in the UK, or at don't think our lives as creative people would be possible in the UK or at least not in a comfortable flat with heating we're economic migrants hi so your lyrics and your show they're all very political and you are very honest on stage and I really appreciate that. So where does it come from? Is this the important thing that is important for your music or is the music important for the lyrics or is it both or? Yeah. It's all of it. And like, I think for for different members of the band, we all have different things that are our priority, but we all really care about all of it. And I think that we're just so lucky that all our different strengths and interests come together and work together really well. And I mean, for me, I think I've been part of the punk scene for a long time, and was always like that like really like loud Like young girl that every all of the men were telling to like be quiet all the time And then I was fronting a band I had the microphone and suddenly they were listening to me and like I I just care so deeply about all of this politics and I want to use that microphone and like use it as an opportunity to make change because I really really believe that um that music and culture is part of creating political change right it's like it's like ideas like the nation state and the gender binary um they're like maintained through culture so I think culture makes sense as like a battleground on which to fight those things and that's that's my philosophy I guess that's really beautiful and I think all the little kids and also the grown-ups in the front row really can see you as an idol and listen to the stuff that you say because it's super important and you're so honest and that's really impressive because that's not the norm that someone is talking about personal stuff on stage. I mean, you talk to a lot of strangers where other people won't talk with their best friend about it. I mean, that's really cool. Another question, Petrol Girls, where is the name from? So I was at, God, like 11 years ago or something, I was at a talk by a writer called Laurie Penny on women and protest. And she's just got, they just have a new book out actually, which is really really good. It's called like Feminism and Modern, like the fight back against modern fascism or something like that anyway it's great i'm reading bitch doctrine also very great yeah laurie penny excellent um and yeah they were doing a talk on on women in protest and they spoke about le petroloos who are i'm saying it wrong but they were like these mythical women of the paris commune that threw molotov cocktails made of milk bottles at like private property. And I was really, really drawn to that symbolism and the like gendered thing about them being milk bottles turned into Molotov cocktails. And that's what our logo is. It's based on that. And she translated them loosely to Petrel Girls. And I just wrote, I write notes because I'm a big nerd. And like I wrote Petrel Girls across my notes and I just wrote I was I write notes because I'm a big nerd and like I wrote Petrol Girls across my notes and underlined it and was like yes that's the band that I want to start amazing that sounds really great um again now I forgot what I wanted to ask. Yeah. No. You're now here and are you staying for the next two days or what is your plan? We can't, we've all got jobs and stuff like that. Our guitarist has a late shift tomorrow night so we've got to go. But I'm sure it's going to be amazing nonetheless. And I wish we could stay because river is like so beautiful and it's so nice yeah we'd love to stay but and you recently released a new album it's called baby I think yeah what is it about and where can I or we buy it um really big question um but yeah I mean it's the name baby comes from the like lead single baby I had an abortion um so it's like um oh my gosh it's like about challenging abortion stigma challenging the silencing and the shame around abortion we've also got tracks on things like femicide um police violence and police Misogyny. Oh my gosh, so many different tracks, so many different topics. But yeah, you can buy it online, petrolgirls.com or over at the merch, but yeah, you're virtual, so you can't, I'm sorry. But yeah, or come and see us at a show. All of our show dates are up on petrolgirls.com. We're going to be touring a lot with the new album Yeah, please come out and see us. Are you also going to play in Austria again soon? Off the top of my head I can't think I know we're at punk rock holiday in Slovenia And I know that we're at fluff fest in Prague Or near Prague, but I think our next Austrian shows are not going to be until the winter but we're planning something quite big for Vienna and we're also planning something really cool for Graz as well. Okay thank you so much for the interview and check out their website and their next tour dates they're amazing I hope you saw all the power they got on stage and all the big messages they were talking about and now have fun with farewell, dear ghost. And yeah, thank you. Bye.
